A “Colossal Betrayal” of Girish Kasaravalli at the National Film Awards
Girish Kasaravalli is an iconic filmmaker who carried the flag of Kannada cinema beyond regional and national borders, making the global film community view the artistic sensibilities of Kannadigas with profound awe. A master director who adorned Kannada cinema with multiple Swarna Kamala (Golden Lotus) and Rajat Kamala (Silver Lotus) awards, his towering legacy has now faced a blatant injustice within the committee corridors of New Delhi. A distasteful episode has emerged, where his seminal work Bimba-Bimbana—co-authored with Gopalakrishna Pai, offering an unparalleled exploration of his artistic journey—was overlooked in the “Best Book on Cinema” category to make way for backdoor lobbyists.
In the history of Kannada film literature, Bimba-Bimbana stands out as an exceptionally rare, serious, and comprehensive work. Documenting Kasaravalli’s cinematic philosophy, aesthetic rigor, and narrative vision, this monumental text undeniably deserved national recognition. Ironically, obscure works that have barely received a single line of critical appraisal or public introduction ended up clinching the award purely through lobbying power. Did the “erudite” jury panel lack the intellectual depth to appreciate the gravity of Kasaravalli’s work, or did the establishment surrender to unscrupulous backroom politics? The question resonating across cultural circles is whether the jury became mere puppets in the hands of influential figures, failing entirely to discern true artistic value.
Neither Girish Kasaravalli nor veteran filmmaker P. Sheshadri—himself a recipient of numerous National Awards—has ever stood before authority with an outstretched hand seeking honors. In fact, Sheshadri’s critical retrospective Chitra-Manthana (spanning from Munnudi to Mohandas), published by Ankita Pustaka, was printed back in 2024. Submitting that remarkable volume for a National Award would have been routine. Yet, a towering figure like Sheshadri consciously decided against submitting his book, humbly asserting, “My book cannot stand in competition before Kasaravalli’s work.”
While such genuine humility and mutual respect still exist among true masters, bypassing selfless creators reveals the utter moral bankruptcy of the award machinery. When self-serving operators rehash the same book under new titles with recycled blurbs, weaponizing awards for personal vanity through shameless lobbying, it is the dignity of Kannada’s cultural heritage that gets sacrificed. It is a profound betrayal that flings ethics to the wind.
The transformative power of Kasaravalli’s cinema is evident in Kanasemba Kudureyaneri. He took a veteran artist like Biradar, who was long confined to stereotypical comedy roles, and shaped him into an actor capable of winning Best Actor at international film festivals—standing shoulder-to-shoulder with legends like Amitabh Bachchan. Was it not Kasaravalli who guided an exceptional actress like Umashree to sweep State, National, and International awards for a single performance? How could a jury genuinely conclude that Bimba-Bimbana, which unpacks the inner genius of such a master filmmaker, lacked merit? Could there be a more tragic joke?
The roots of this distasteful lobbying lie deeply entrenched within regional departments, the state film academy, and official film festival committees. Individuals who occupy these local positions, decorating themselves with grand titles like “master architect” of cinema and securing posts like Artistic Director, leverage those very networks to lobby in Delhi. It has become imperative to uproot these charades right at home.
Kasaravalli does not depend on awards, nor can any trophy truly measure his stature. However, if a stand is not taken against this injustice—where genuine, self-effacing talent is humiliated while a red carpet is rolled out for backchannel lobbyists—the world of authentic art will inevitably be swallowed by the corrupt and influential. It is time the conscience of the Kannada film industry finally wakes up.
