ಇವತ್ತಿಗೆ ಗ್ರಾಮೀಣ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳ ಜನರಿಗೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮೀಡಿಯಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿಸಬೇಕು, ಕಾನ್ವೆಂಟ್ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿಸಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವ ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತ ಅಪ ಪ್ರಚಾರ, ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕರೆತಂದು ಪ್ರೈವೇಟ್ ಸ್ಕೂಲಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿಸುವ ದಲ್ಲಾಳಿಗಳು, ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಕ್ಕಿಟ್ಟ ಬಂಡವಾಳಶಾಹಿಗಳು… ಇವೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಸಾಹಸದ ಕೆಲಸ. ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ನಿಯಮದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇಂತಿಷ್ಟು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಹಾಜರಾತಿ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಶಾಲೆ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಯುವಂತಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡಿಯೇ ಲಕ್ಷಾಂತರ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಮುಚ್ಚಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ರೀತಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಖರ್ಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ʻಗುರಿʼಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಹಾಗನ್ನಿಸೋದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಚ್ಯುತ್, ಉಗ್ರಂ ಮಂಜು, ಟಿ.ಎಸ್. ನಾಗಾಭರಣ, ಅವಿನಾಶ್, ಜಾಕ್ ಜಾಲಿ, ಚಂದ್ರಪ್ರಭಾ, ಪವನ್ ಕುಮಾರ್, ಕೆಜಿಎಫ್ ತಾತ, ಮಿಮಿಕ್ರಿ ಗೋಪಿ… ಹೀಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಜನ ಅನುಭವೀ ಮತ್ತು ಕಮರ್ಷಿಯಲ್ ನಟರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲಾ ಜನ ಕಲಾವಿದರಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಅಂದರೆ ಬಜೆಟ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆಯೇನೂ ಆಗಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕವಾಗಿಯೂ ಚಿತ್ರ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದೆ. ಉತ್ತಮ ಲೊಕೇಷನ್ನುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರೀಕರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪಳನಿ ಸೇನಾಪತಿ ಅವರ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಸಂಗೀತ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಅಪ್ಡೇಟ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾದ ತೂಕ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಮಹಾನಿಧಿ ಮತ್ತು ಜೀವತ್ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಪಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಉಗ್ರಂ ಮಂಜುಗೆ ಈ ರೀತಿ ಅಭಿನಯಿಸಲು ಹೇಗೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವೋ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಮರ್ಷಿಯಲ್ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಖಳನಾಗಿ ಅಬ್ಬರಿಸುವ ಮಂಜು, ʻಗುರಿʼಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆಯದ್ದೇ ರೀತಿ ನಟಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಜಯಶ್ರೀ ಕೂಡಾ ಅಮ್ಮನಾಗಿ ಆಪ್ತ ನಟನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿರುವ ಅಚ್ಯುತ್ ತಮ್ಮ ನಟನೆಯಿಂದ ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Children’s films are a rarity in the Kannada film industry. Even among those that are made, films that leave a lasting impression and offer a positive message to society are even rarer. Currently, a film has arrived that will be cherished not just by children, but by adults as well. That film is Guri!
This movie, which effectively voices the right to children’s education, is not just for kids; it is a lesson that every parent and teacher should watch.
The Story
The film is set in a government school with a handful of students and one dedicated teacher.
Today, even in rural areas, there is a growing fascination with enrolling children in English medium and convent schools. This is compounded by systematic negative propaganda against government schools, the presence of agents who poach students for private institutions, and capitalists who have turned education into a business. Amidst all this, saving a government school is a truly heroic task. According to government rules, a school cannot function without a minimum student attendance. This very rule has led to the closure of lakhs of government schools.
A teacher, who considers his school a temple and himself its priest, faces this exact dilemma. A systematic conspiracy is hatched to shut down his school. Despite it being a government school, the teacher has nurtured his students to be intelligent and creative, and he is desperate to save it. However, all the unfolding events seem to push the school closer to its closure. In the midst of this, what adventure will the children embark on? Whom will they meet? Will they succeed in saving their school? The story revolves around whether the children and their teacher can achieve their “Guri” (Goal).
Production and Performances
Typically, films centered on children are made on a low budget. ‘Guri’ does not give that impression. The film features a host of experienced and commercially successful actors like Achyuth Kumar, Ugramm Manju, T.S. Nagabharana, Avinash, Jack Jolly, Chandraprabha, Pawan Kumar, the grandfather from KGF, and Mimicry Gopi. The presence of such a large cast indicates that the budget was not small. The film is also technically sound and has been shot in excellent locations. The film’s impact would have been even greater if Palani Senapathi’s background score had been a bit more updated. Mahanidhi and Jeevath are notable in their roles as the children.
It’s astonishing to see Ugramm Manju in such a role. Manju, who is known for his roaring villainous roles in commercial cinema, delivers a completely different kind of performance in ‘Guri’. Jayashree also gives a heartfelt performance as a mother. Achyuth Kumar, as the teacher, endears himself to the audience with his ever-natural acting.
The Core Message
The crux of the film is: “Adults can achieve anything if they set their minds to it, but if children themselves set their minds to it, they can change the minds of adults.”
The film’s biggest plus point is that it tells the story of the importance of education from the children’s perspective. It deserves praise for questioning serious issues like systemic neglect, parental ignorance, and the lack of political will, all through the voices of children. While focusing on the education system, the film also touches upon the issue of child trafficking. All these elements mark a victory for the director, Selvan Madappan.
